NASA announces Ike-caused launch slips of next two shuttle missions

NASA announced on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, that the STS-125 mission of space shuttle Atlantis and the STS-126 mission of space shuttle Endeavour will be delayed due to the after-effects of Hurricane Ike. The mission of the crew of STS-125 aboard space shuttle Atlantis is to service and repair the Hubble Space Telescope. This mission has been slipped to October 14, from its earlier target date of October 10, 2008. Its launch time is now scheduled for 10:19 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The delay of STS-125, now necessitates the next mission, STS-126, will be slipped by four days, from November 12 to November 16, 2008. Its new launch time is set at 7:07 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). The crew of space shuttle Endeavour will fly to the International Space Station to resume assembly tasks. The decision to delay both missions was made based on lost of training and mission preparations from Hurricane Ike.
