Science DiscussionsThe American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA ) organized the by-invitation-only event. It will be held at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, U.S.A. The celebration begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), or 1200 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). As stated by the NASA press release, the event “… honors NASA's 50th Anniversary and celebrates the power of innovation and discovery, and recognizes the agency's challenges and achievements over the past five decades.” [NASA: “50th Anniversary Gala Event Carried Live On NASA TV and Internet”] The event will be carried live on the TV station “NASA Television” and on the Internet at http://www.nasa.gov/. The master of ceremonies for the event is WJLA-TV news anchor Leon Harris. Participating in the event is AIAA president George Muellner, former Mercury and space shuttle astronaut John Glenn, former Mercury and Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong, and NASA administrator Michael Griffin.
