Page 2 of 3 Another weird niggle is that I’m running the latest Firefox 3.0.1 browser, and I’ve downloaded the Exit Reality plugin direct from the Exit Reality site. But when I try to launch it via Firefox, I’m told I haven’t got the latest Exit Reality plugin, which I can upgrade. Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Luckily you can skip the upgrade, and get into 3D world, or see your own site in 3D, but sites that aren’t designed for 3D viewing await their owners to spruce up the 3D version, and until that starts happening, 2D sites look weird in 3D, and not very appealing. The experience in Internet Explorer doesn't appear to be any better, sadly... In short, the whole thing seems for now – at this early stage – to be a bit of a waste of time for 2D to 3D sites that haven’t yet been updated, but naturally the point of releasing such a plugin is to encourage site owners to get with the 3D program and take advantage of the system. You can see, from the ExitReality blog, some YouTube videos of the service in operation, and here the action seems to be much smoother – but if they’re running on high spec machines, so much for Stefanic’s claim the service works on “low spec machines”. So, what do the Exit Reality people say about the development, which aside from very much looking like Second Life or the upcoming PS3 “Home”, seems to be a great idea – if only it ran smoothly? Well, the Exit Reality press release (PDF link) celebrates the launch of the new browser plug-in, which at this stage only works in Firefox and Internet Explorer – no Google Chrome, Opera or Safari versions as yet, it would seem. The press release trumpets the 18th of September 2008 as the day the web went 3D, suggesting it to be as “groundbreaking as the invention of the mobile phone”, although so far I’m seriously not impressed. The aforementioned founder of ExitReality, Danny Stefanic, said that: “ExitReality goes far and beyond any other 3D destination ever created. With Second Life and World of Warcraft, users visit the one destination for a virtual experience, but ExitReality allows you to view not just that one website, but the entire World Wide Web in 3D.” Stefanic’s comments continue on page 3. |
