Before Hurricane Ike swept through the Johnson Space Center, just north of Galveston on the Texas Gulf Coast, operations for the International Space Station were switched to safer locations. Now, the JSC Mission Control Center is about to regain its operational status.

NASA announced September 18, 2008 (media release: “NASA’s Johnson Space Center to reopen Monday after Ike”) that the Johnson Space Center will re-open on Monday, September 22, 2008, and flight control for the International Space Station within the Mission Control Center at Johnson will resume on the morning of Friday, September 19, 2008.

Since Hurricane Ike swept over the Texas Gulf Coast, flight control for the Space Station has resided in temporary control stations outside of Austin, Texas, and later to a facility at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

After assessing damage to the Johnson facility over the past few days, the NASA report states, “The Mission Control Center and other key Johnson facilities are largely unscathed, partly because of extensive preparations and the work of a hurricane rideout team of more than 60 people. However, some center buildings suffered roof, window and facade damage. Several light poles were downed, as were a number of trees. The damage assessment and cleanup continues.”

As of Wednesday evening, September 17, 2008, personnel at the Johnson Space Center has restored electricity to the facility, along with access to non-potable water.

However, assessments of damage to the buildings on site are still underway. Repairs to the infrastructure of JSC are improving, as reported by the NASA Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Further information on the status of the surrounding area of the Johnson Space Center follows on page two.
