Bariatric surgery, also commonly called weight loss surgery, refers to the numerous surgical procedures performed to treat obesity in humans.

It alters the gastrointestinal tract (often called the alimentary canal), which includes all of the organs involved in the intake of food, digestion of food for its nutrients, and expulsion of waste, in order to reduce nutrient intake and absorption, and thus caloric intake.

Arapally added, "Obesity is the biggest biomedical problem in the country, and a minimally invasive alternative would make an enormous difference in choices and outcomes for people.”

The study led by Dr. Arepally was published in the September 16, 2008 issue of the journal Radiology. (At the time of writing and researching this article, the full article was not available in the journal.)

A similar study by Arepally and colleagues was published in 2007 in the journal Radiology. The article was entitled “Catheter-directed Gastric Artery Chemical Embolization for Modulation of Systemic Ghrelin Levels in a Porcine Model: Initial Experience.”
