Page 2 of 3 As I’m using an original iPhone 2G, I’ve never experienced any of the 3G reception issues that iPhone 3G owners have loudly complained about, but some initial reports suggest that Steve Jobs’ promise of much better 3G performance has been delivered. Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
The iPhone Dev Team has also been hard at work, and have already released their latest PwnageTool 2.1 to support the jailbreaking of iPhone 3G models running iPhone OS 2.1, and supporting the jailbreaking and unlocking of iPhone 2G models also running the new OS update. This was done in record time, surprising everyone and keeping users keen to upgrade to a jailbroken (and unlocked on iPhone 2G models) 2.1 OS very, very happy indeed. PwnageTool 2.1 (and QuickPwn 1.1) are only available for Mac users at this stage, with the WinPwn people yet to update their tool so Windows users can enjoy the same pwnage benefits. But Windows-using iPhone 2G owners running a pwned/jailbroken/unlocked version of 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 firmware can simply use iTunes 8’s “update” (NOT restore) tool to load the new iPhone OS 2.1 onto their iPhones. Yes, this means losing the jailbreak capability to run unauthorised third party apps via Cydia or Installer 4, but as the “update” from iTunes 8 doesn’t touch the baseband, your iPhone 2G stays blissfully unlocked. And naturally, when the WinPwn tool becomes available in the next few days (if not sooner), the ability to run pwnage for juicy jailbreaking will come back, restoring access to those unauthorised third party apps, although you’ll need to re-download and install them. But it’s not for all Windows-using iPhone 2G owners... please read on to page 3. |
