The iPhone OS two-point-oh-woes seem finally a thing of the past, with
snappy responsiveness from the OS, the SMS keyboard typing, loading of
contacts and other apps, no crashes (as yet) and reports from some
iPhone 3G users of more bars and better reception, but not everyone
agrees. Meanwhile, my unlocked iPhone 2G is now happily running OS 2.1
– how did I do it?Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Of course, iPhone OS 2.0 brought many benefits, including the authorised third-party apps App Store, that were simply too tempting to ignore. Naturally, early iPhone 3G adopters had no choice but to use iPhone OS 2.0, because that’s what it came pre-loaded with – and how many iPhone fans wanting to upgrade to 3G or buy an iPhone for the first time were willing to delay their purchase until Apple got around to releasing the first major OS 2.x update? Clearly not too many people, given the millions of iPhone 3G units that were sold, even despite the quick reports from early adopters of the bugs being experienced, for even with a buggy OS, the iPhone still outclasses every other handheld computer and phone with the user interface. Yes, devices such as the N-Series Nokia’s, among other smartphones, do beat the iPhone feature-wise in many ways, with Nokia’s upcoming new N-Series devices (the N96, N85 and N79) set to take Nokia’s flagship devices to new heights, a topic about which I’ll write more soon, and will certainly make many Nokia fans very happy indeed. But the iPhone UI still beats everyone else, especially those iPhone-clone style phones with large screens running Windows Mobile or a custom phone OS, and for many, the bugs were worth putting up with. But that has all changed now with the iPhone OS 2.1. I wrote an article just under a month ago questioning whether 2.1 would be a panacea or simply more purgatory for suffering OS 2.0 users, and so far, it’s looking quite heavenly. No, there’s no “cut, copy and paste”, Flash support, Notes synchronisation or other missing features that have been magically included – hopefully they’ll come in iPhone OS 2.2, or somewhere in between 2.2 and 3.0. But the lagginess is gone, SMS text typing is back to full speed, and the experience feels, so far, as smooth as it did when the iPhone OS was in its 1.x days. So, what about those 3G reception issues? Please read on to page 2. |
