New Aussie Apple Store launches in Melbourne, hands on with new iPods! E-mail

I also had the chance to chat to some of the Apple store staff, all of whom seemed to radiate that Apple-ness, which is usually ultra polite and friendly.

Depending on one’s mood or level of cynicism, some Apple people can seem to almost be too sickly sweet in an out there but still slightly restrained way, with at times an almost semi- religious fervour-like feel, depending on the person in question.

I guess I’ve partly described a contradiction in terms, but whatever you think about the sales staff, they’ve obviously gone through some kind of strict Apple training regime to ensure they know as many of answers as possible and have received Apple’s lessons in being friendly and nice.

It is, at least, a far cry and incredibly dramatic improvement over the typical sales person who doesn’t care, doesn’t know and isn’t very helpful, which will probably be quite a surprise to anyone who has never been in an Apple store before.

It’s also something that is still quite unique to Apple. While Telstra may have copied Apple’s store concept with its T-Life stores, and while the T-Life store staff are all friendly and nice, too, Apple store staff just have this whole extra level of energy and devotion... you really have to experience it to fully understand what I’m talking about, and then you’ll know.

So... what happened when 10am rolled around? Well, a few minutes before the journalists were told that we’d have to exit the store just before 10am so the opening could start.

As we left the store, we were each handed a small Apple plastic bag (even Apple’s plastic bags are cool) and within was a box that contained a black t-shirt with the word “Chadstone” on the front next to an Apple logo in white.

Turns out Apple had 1000 of these boxes to hand out to the first thousand visitors, and judging by the near kilometre long queue and the several hundred people (if not a thousand or more) waiting to get in, Apple surely gave them all away over the course of the day.

At 10am, loud cheering could be heard emanating from a corridor on the left hand side of the store. Suddenly, dozens of blue and orange shirted Apple store employees came streaming out into the front of the store, yelling, whopping, cheering, high-fiving and clapping.

It looked like there were close to 100 staff who kept on coming out, with the first to have come out running out of sight past all the waiting guests, continuing to whoop and cheer. Soon all the employees were out and they’d all disappeared, and then in a couple of minutes, they started coming back, this time running into the store.

The whoops and cheers didn’t stop, I stayed for an extra half hour and the cheers were still going. What was happening was that groups of 10-20 people were being let into the store, and as people left the store more people were let in. Each person was greeting with cheers, smiles and laughter and handed a box with T-shirt within.
