It could be a hoax, but the antispore blog has been up for a couple of days now, with all sorts of raves against the latest Maxis opus, Spore.  Who would have thought that a PG rated game could raise christian ire as much as a good session of Grand Theft Auto IV?

When I wrote my Spore review headline, adding “Creationists beware!”, it was supposed to be a little light humour.  The only possible people that in anyway could be offended by a game like Spore would be those with a predilection for accepting the wacky ‘intelligent design’ theorem.

Seems I should not have been so close minded on my mirth.  If the iTWire discussion pages are anything to go by, Creationists have embraced Spore in a kind of twisted logic fashion.

In case you didn’t know, Spore spans life from the accepted scientific foundation of cellular through to sentient and beyond, through a series of stages that ultimately lead to exploring our galaxy – click here for the full review.

A big part of the game are the [ironically named?] Creators.  The tool that lets you create buildings, vehicles and more importantly, creatures.

Manipulating the creatures look and characteristics in an intelligent way, mimics the evolutionary processes to achieve a playable device that can survive the current situation.  Nice blending of game-play with a touch of theology (from multiple sources) comes together in a mainstream game.

Now it might be a hoax, but the further you read into it, the more it actually seems to be serious.  The recently started antispore.com blog is based on the assumption that developer Will Wright, his company Maxis and publisher Electronic Arts are Satan in disguise.  Not the first time EA has been linked with evil ways, but a new way of making the link.

According to the blog’s creator/designer/evolver “I created this blog to find support for and follow my progress in letting Electronic Arts know that their biggest attack on Christian values to date will not be tolerated.
We can not allow the gaming industry to invade our homes and poison the minds of our children.
After all, their billions in revenue and all the advertising in the world are no match for the power of God.”

From the feedback on the blog, it looks like there is a way to go in convincing the general public that Spore is evil.  And then there is the fact that they point out such evilness by linking the examples directly to the blog, cool!  A one stop shop to look at all the corrupt ways the Spore sand-box tools can be utilised.

RockStar Games have always produced compelling adult orientated titles such as the GTA series, with the latest incarnation, Grand Theft Auto IV being held up by some sections of the community as being responsible for destroying civilisation as we know it.

Who would have thought that Maxis and EA would stoop so low as to steal RockStar Games and their publisher, Take-Two’s marketing approach to push the PG rated Spore.  Brilliance.  In the meantime my six year old daughter and I will continue to enjoy the family fun of Spore.
