Apple seeds new iPods, offers surprises – and disappointments E-mail

So those pics of the new iPod nano were spot on, as were the rumours about iTunes. The nano comes in 9 colours, there’s a new iPod Touch with speakers, volume control, Nike+ and 36 hours of audio, and OS 2.1 software arrives at last – but there’s no 64GB iPod Touch, and no 32GB iPhone 3G.

Apple’s rockin’ “Let’s Rock” event of September 9 (US Time) saw a still-thin Steve Jobs alight the stage and light up the audience with a series of cool announcements.

As I sadly wasn’t at the event itself, but following a series of live blogs online (with photos) including Engadget and Gizmodo, I’ll definitely be downloading the talk when it becomes available to download via iTunes to see it as video and experience it all again.

But that hasn’t stopped me from learning about all the cool new developments from Apple, which at this time of year always boil down to new products to capture the all-important Christmas/end-of-year/holiday shopping season.

And it’s clear to see that Apple will remain at the top of the mp3/media player heap with its latest bountiful harvest!

First up is iTunes 8, which comes with HD television shows at US $2.99 each, welcome NBC television shows back into the fold, and offers up the “Genius” tool to intelligently offer song selections from the iTunes store for songs you haven’t yet purchased.

I’m not sure if it will also intelligently make song recommendations available for songs already in your library too, but as soon as iPod and iPhone users download the new software, we’ll all be able to find out.

Given that iTunes has over 65 million users, the Genius feature will grow in intelligence over time, with the data collected anonymously and fully opt-outable for those not interested in participation.

Now boasting 8.5 million songs, and in the US version at least, US users will also enjoy over 125,000 podcasts, more than 30,000 TV shows, 2600 movies and over 3000 apps, only 60 days after the App Store launched.

iTunes is also the No.1 distributor of digital music from any vendor and has more than 65 million customers, facts that Steve Jobs was very proud of, and justifiably so.

iTunes 8 retains coverflow, of course, but will now also show you album titles as “tiles” on the screen, if so desired. But it’s not just for music, but TV shows, movies and podcasts, too.

Jobs also noted that after 160 million iPod sales, NPD data shows the iPod with a 73.4% marketshare, followed by 10:15AM "Now let's talk about the iPod. NPD data shows iPod with 73.4% marketshare. No.2 is listed as “other” at 15.4%, Sandisk clocks in at number 3 with 8.6% and Microsoft squeaks into the 4th spot with only 2.6% market share.

There’s also more than 5000 accessories for the iPod too, while 90% of new cars in the US market offer iPod integration.

So, what are the new iPods?! Please read on to page 2.
