User log-ins to determine access rights can be handled by the firewall itself, or via an Active Directory server. "That's a major difference between us and most of our competitors," said Vitek.

In some circumstances, for example where contractors or visitors need temporary access, it is appropriate to use a combination of Active Directory for staff while the firewall's database is used to control other users' access.

WinRoute Firewall 6.5 has already been deployed at a prominent golf club in Sydney's northern suburbs by Kerio partner Secom Technology. The club's network includes a public access terminal and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

“The current IT environment posed huge security risks and we needed to address these first.” Said Jason Drew, technical director and chief systems architect at Secom, yet the implementation - which included enforcing the club's acceptable use policy and  restricting the hours of use of the hot spot - only took a few hours.

Support for multiple connections allows remote support services and email traffic to be kept separate from members' use of the Internet.

Pricing starts at $US399 for 10 users, plus an extra $US100 for the optional McAfee anti-virus. (Additional scanning engines can be used with WinRoute Firewall, including those from Grisoft, Kaspersky, Sophos and Symantec.)

Additional user licences cost $US99 for five, or $US129 with the McAfee option. The firewall is designed to handle up to 1000 users, though typical installations have between five and 100 users.

WinRoute Firewall 6.5 runs on Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista.
