The Orlando Sentinel article, by Robert Block, Sentinel space editor, is entitled “Frustrated NASA chief vents about agency's fate.” Within the article is the Monday August 18, 2008 internal (and subsequently “leaked”) NASA memo sent by Griffin to his top administrators. According to NASA media release “Statement of NASA Administrator Michael Griffin on Aug. 18 Email,” released on September 7, 2008, Griffin makes the following statement: “The leaked internal email fails to provide the contextual framework for my remarks, and my support for the administration's policies. Administration policy is to retire the shuttle in 2010 and purchase crew transport from Russia until Ares and Orion are available." Griffin continues, "The administration continues to support our request for an INKSNA exemption. Administration policy continues to be that we will take no action to preclude continued operation of the International Space Station past 2016. I strongly support these administration policies, as do OSTP and OMB.” INKSNA is an extension to the existing waiver in the Iran North Korea Syria Nonproliferation Act (INKSNA) that allows NASA to continue to purchase ISS (International Space Station) flight services after 2011. Specifically, this waver allows NASA to purchase spacecraft from Russia to send astronauts and cargo back and forth to the ISS. What does INKSNA involve? Please read on. |
