Page 2 of 2 This power-saving feature has been added to nine Adaptec's Series 2 and Series 5 Unified Serial RAID controllers ranging from the 2405 to the 52445, and is managed with the same Adaptec Storage Manager utility as the controllers' other features. "We're not asking people to learn any new technology," said field engineer Neil Cameron. The presence of a large cache on the controller card helps to offset the delay while drives spin up. And the controller only activates the drives that are actually needed for an operation. For example, reading or writing a small amount of data may only involve a couple of drives in an eight-drive array. Cameron pointed out that many drives aren't constantly accessed, so there is plenty of scope to reduce storage running costs. Adaptec's web site features a calculator that can be used to estimate the likely saving. Series 2 and Series 5 controllers with this feature are available immediately. It may be possible to update existing controllers - contact Adaptec support for information.
