Ovi pits Nokia directly against Apple and its iTunes store which has captured a massive proportion of the global digital music market. According to the company's senior vice president for customer market operations, Urpo Karjalainen, it is evidence of Nokia's plans to become "an internet company".

"The industry is converging towards Internet-driven experiences and Ovi represents Nokia's vision in combining the Internet and mobility," he says.

"Nokia is the number one mobile device company in the world. Looking into the future, we will deliver great devices, combined with compelling experiences and services, to make it easy for people to unlock thepotential of the Internet."
