In an effort to snare a larger slice of the burgeoning music download market, mobile giant Nokia has unveiled a new service that provides unlimited access to its massive library of tracks.

Called ‘Comes With Music’, the service will go live first in the United Kingdom next month before being rolled out around the world. No date has yet been announced for an Australian debut.

The initiative is another step in Nokia’s journey to expand from being a maker of handsets into the lucrative areas of services and content. With profit margins on devices under constant pressure the company needs new revenue streams to help it maintain its growth curve.

Full details are still to be released, however Nokia has confirmed the ‘Comes With Music’ offer involves a Nokia 5310 handset and a 12-month unlimited access subscription to the company’s music store.

In the UK, Nokia has signed an exclusive agreement with retail chain Carphone Warehouse to sell pre-paid versions of the package. It’s expected to become a hot item during the run up to Christmas.

Nokia’s head of entertainment and communities, Tero Ojanperä, says having unlimited access to a music library will change the way many people think about music.

“With unlimited music access for a year, you can enjoy your favourite artists or delve into new genres without having to worry about individual track or album purchases,” he says.

Further details about the ‘Comes With Music” service will be provided at a launch event to be held in London on October 2.

Last year Nokia announced its new portal, called Ovi, which it hopes will become a one-stop shop for mobile users looking for content. As well as accessing music, the service allows users to share photos, store files and play games. According to company executives the range of services will be gradually increased as new market demands are identified.
