Google to unveil shiny Chrome web browser

Page 1 of 4 ! Google has taken the unusual - though not completely original - step of using a comic book to introduce Chrome, its forthcoming web browser. The new open source browser is promised to deliver greater speed and reliability but questions are still being asked as to why its necessary. Why would Google bother to develop a new browser? The answer to that question can be found right at the beginning of the comic, where Chrome product manager Brian Rakowski is quoted as saying "Today, most of what we use the web for on a day-to-day basis aren't just web pages, they're applications." If Google is about anything other than search and advertising, it's about web applications. And if it doesn't believe other people's browsers are going to cut the mustard for future web apps, the obvious answer is for the company to roll its own. But despite Rakowski's observation "Wouldn't it be great to start from scratch?", that's not exactly what Google's doing. However, it's hard to argue with Google's stated goals of improvements to stability, speed, security and user interface. Or that those security improvements need to be established in the browser's architecture, not slapped on as an afterthought. One way this will be achieved is said to be by having each browser tab associated with a different process, so that a problem in one tab should not affect or spread to the others. Furthermore, this approach will help avoid slowdowns due to memory leaks (one of the banes of my working life), as opening and closing a tab creates and destroys the memory structures associated with it - a process that can also be triggered by navigating between domains.
