Scroggie says many people have become very comfortable with sharing an extraordinary amount of personal information online through such sites. Through the use of social engineering, such information could be used to obtain passwords and thereby access to corporate systems.

As well as the technical aspects of the extra security that is now required, employee education is also vitally important. Reminding people to think before posting personal details on networking sites could lessen the chance of such details being used against a company.

“Companies need to be aware that as well as protecting their assets this is also about protecting their reputations,” he says. “That’s one of the biggest challenges facing business today.”

IT managers need to realise that they can no longer use a “locked down’ approach to corporate security. Rather, a combination of technology and user education is needed to ensure that vital company resources and data remains secure.
