Implementing Solver as a separate application that communicates with Excel via AppleScript does incur a speed penalty, but the new version incorporates new methods for solving linear mixed-integer programming problems that can provide a net speed improvement.

Solver for Mac Excel 2008 requires Excel version 12.1.2 or later, but will run on Intel or PowerPC systems with Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.4 or later. It can be downloaded via Frontline's web site.
