Of course, Meyer could always turn to the detective genre for her next work as she insists that she has "a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique."

Meyer says that due to manuscript changes she "can tell when each left my possession and to whom it was given."

In a bizarre twist, which probably does signal that she is serious about ending the series of books right here, the author has made the partial draft manuscript available for download from her website for free.

Whether this will placate the fans, and remember they are mainly teenage girls, remains to be seen.

Still, I am sure that they will be happy in the knowledge that Meyer hopes the whole experience will "at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control."

Certainly the news has kicked off something of a hormone-fuelled comment storm at the various Twilgiht fan sites around the Web. Writing at the Twilight Lexicon Blog one fan identified as Niki says "I’m kind of mad at her. I can’t belive she let this get to her! I thought that the book, Edward, and all of us fans meant more to us than a bruised ego."

Somehow I suspect that love_bites might have hit the stake in the heart when writing "I hope “indefinitely” isn’t as long as a vampire’s lifetime but rather a couple of months!"
