Secondly, it's reluctance to communicate openly with customers concerning the nature of the fix in 2.0.2.  Merely saying that it "improves communication with 3G networks" did not convey the importance of getting the update onto as many iPhone 3Gs as possible to have the desired effect.

Given the problems they had been experiencing, it seems many owners may have delayed installing the update pending reports that it really did improve connectivity, so nearby users didn't get the benefit even if they had updated to 2.0.2.

A "hey guys, we really need you to install this update" message at the time of its release might have gone a long way to improve the situation.
