One of the criticisms of previous 'e-waste' initiatives has been that they have been known to involve the export of used hardware to third world countries with low occupational health and environmental standards. Some jurisdictions have legislated against such exports and imports, Earlier this month, Greenpeace claimed e-waste is still being illegally exported from Europe and the US to countries such as Ghana. As a result, shanty towns have sprung up around many these potentially toxic high-tech waste heaps sometimes containing quantitities of hazardous heavy metals such as lead and mercury.
