Canadians going crazy for shiny Apples? E-mail

With all the fuss about iPhone 3G connectivity and MobileMe woes, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Apple's image has lost its shine. But a recent Canadian survey shows the opposite with 34 percent of respondents saying they plan to buy a MacBook or MacBook Pro in the next 90 days. Can this be true?

If a recent survey can be believed, Apple’s star looks set to rise even further with the news that Canadians want to increase Apple’s North American market share to greater heights.

According the National Post, more than 4400 people were surveyed between August 4 and 12.

To my mind, that figure seems amazingly high. Even though that period covers the North American back to school/off to college buying season, an assertion that one third of the population will be buying a new notebook regardless of brand sounds extremely questionable.

I don't have access to the original report - prepared by RBC Capital Markets and ChangeWave Research - but my guess is that only people planning to buy a notebook were included in the 34 percent calculation. The idea that one-third of those plan to buy a MacBook or MacBook Pro is good news for Apple, but not completely outlandish.

The trend is moving in Apple's favour - the proportion of those planning to buy a Mac notebook is up from 31 percent in the May survey. Similarly, desktop Mac buying intention rose from 27 percent to 30 percent.

What's the current market share looking like? See page two.
