ComTel cites Blyk statistics claiming that Blyk reached its annual target of 100,000 subscribers six months ahead of schedule. Blyk says it has run over 900 mobile only campaigns in the UK with an average response rate 29 percent. The service launched with 45 international brands and Blyk aims to boost that number to 200 by the end of 2008. It will launch into the Netherlands later this year, and in Germany, Spain and Belgium in 2009. Blyk claims that its average cost to advertisers per response is 53p, compared to averages for online of £1.50, email of £2.00, unprofiled mobile SMS £2.22 and direct mail (£12.50).

ComTel has a long term network capacity agreement with Vodafone Australia which also enables it to service wholesale customers operating their own mobile and ISP brands and Sweet said ComTel was ready to offer white labelling capabilities for organisations and businesses wanting to brand their own mobile offering.

In June 2008, MicroEQUITIES, an Australian investment advisor focussing on ASX-listed 'micro cap' companies, initiated reporting on ComTel with a strong 'buy' recommendation. It said that ComTel's recent acquisition of Empowered Communications - one of Australia's largest independent media networks - had positioned it as "one of Australia's fastest growing telecom providers in the opt-in mobile advertising space."

MicroEQUITIES gave ComTel a target price of $0.16, an 84 percent premium on the current price, and was forecasting revenues of $36.4m and EBITDA of $7.4m in FY08. ComTel has yet to release its FY08 results. On 25 August, hours after it announced the new service, its share price had risen to $0.064, after closing at $0.059 the previous day.

ComTel may be the first to offer ad subsidised phone calls, but in late 2007 another operator, Fluc, launched in Australia  offering cellphone customers hard cash if they are willing to receive ads relevant to them, their locations and their friends. However the service seems to be presently suspended.

Its web site carries a banner proclaiming "Presenting the new Fluc...Fluc is launching its new site soon. Watch this space." It has been that way for some time, a blog posting dated mid June says: "We have some very exciting things in the pipeline for the new site which we think you are going to love. To all the members who have signed up to our test beta - you will be the first people to access, test and provide feedback on the new site when its ready."

The current site does boast a store: it has nothing whatsoever to do with mobile phone services, but is devoted entirely to selling tee shirts that exploit the innuendo potential of the word Fluc (eg one emblazoned with the logo "Fancy a Fluc?").
