In the US Pingdom has even been able to plot popularity by state and reports that "interest appears significantly stronger in Utah and California than the rest of the country." Linux is even more popular in Utah than in home-of-high-tech California. Why? Pingdom has no answer. In addition to Linux, Pingdom examined the search popularity of eight common Linux distributions: Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian, Red Hat, Mandriva, Slackware and Gentoo. It found that: Ubuntu is most popular in Italy and Cuba; OpenSUSE in Russia and the Czech Republic; Red Hat in Bangladesh and Nepal; Debian is most popular in Cuba (and in fact Cuba is in the top five interest-wise of three of the eight distributions in the survey.) Indonesia is in the top five of four of the distributions; Russia and the Czech Republic are in the top five of five of the distributions and the USA is not in the top five of any of the distributions. Strange results you may say, but after all they are based solely on how often these words are used in Google searches. However the results have been normalised to remove the size of each region as a factor. In other words, rankings are in proportion to the total number of Google searches from that region. You can find much, much more information, including maps on the Pingdom blog site , and post your feedback. In particular, Pingdom would love to know what is it with Linux and Utah?
