Telstra promises a 21Mbps Next G network by the end of 2008 and 42Mbps by the end of 2009, and while you’ll need new wireless modems to take advantage of the extra speeds, competitors haven’t yet announced plans to similarly speed up their networks, giving Telstra an ace up its sleeve and a continuing reason to have higher prices than anyone else. It just means we should see even better pricing from Voda, Optus and 3 Mobile to come, as price will be their major weapon against Telstra, and will eventually “force” Telstra to “lower” its prices too, as it has done today, by offering more megabytes (and gigabytes!) for the money. BigPond Group MD, Justin Milne, had a number of things to say about the new plans: “The new BigPond Wireless Broadband plans reflect the exceptional value we offer customers who are looking for a reliable wireless broadband service. “New customers with multiple Telstra services can receive a discount of 12 months half price off their wireless broadband access. When you consider our superior speed and coverage with our wireless broadband plus all the benefits BigPond provides such as access to unmetered entertainment like news, music, movies, sport and games, the choice is simple and it’s why customers are connecting with BigPond. “We have also removed the different speed plans which may have confused some customers, so all of our wireless broadband plans are now available with the fastest network speeds available.” BigPond is offering a 7.2Mbps express card, USB mobile “card” or a “BigPond 7.2 Home Network Gateway modem” (a wireless broadband router) with Wi-Fi, broadcasting your 3.5G connection onto 802.11g Wi-Fi so several people in your home can share it.
