After much price competition from 3 Mobile, Optus and Vodafone, Telstra
has finally moved to increase the value of its Next G wireless
broadband plans for consumers and business. They’re still a lot more
expensive than competitors, but the introduction of a 10GB plan will
make some users very happy indeed.Featured Whitepaper

Even so, with offers of 7GB for $49 and 6GB for $39 in the marketplace, some users in metro areas that don’t travel often to rural or regional areas may simply not have needed Telstra’s additional speed or coverage and were swayed instead by price. After all, Telstra’s 400MB wireless broadband plan costs $39.95 per month, 1GB costs $59.95 per month, 3GB costs $89.95 per month, while the new 10GB plan costs $129.95 per month, with these prices available from Sunday the 24th of August for BigPond customers and from the 5th of September for Next G Telstra Business customers. There are no more speed distinctions between plans either, they all operate as fast as their network device allows. If you’re a BigPond customer, you’ll need to log into your account and manually select your new plan, while Business customers will need to speak to their account manager for the change to be made. That 10GB plan is $14.90 per month more than the previous 3GB plan, priced at $114.95 per month – so anyone on the existing 3GB plan is likely to jump at more than tripling their download limit. But the 1GB and 3GB plans are still vastly more expensive than completing 6 and 7GB plans, and will struggle to be attractive to metro users who don’t necessarily need the fastest speed or widest coverage. Additional usage charges are $0.25c per megabyte, the contract plan is 24 months and new customers (only) with “multiple Telstra services” can qualify for 12 months of “half price” access, improving the value further, although without those “multiple Telstra services” not everyone will qualify. New Telstra business customers will need to check with their account manager to see if any discounts apply. So, what does this mean for Vodafone, Optus and 3 Mobile, and what does it mean for the pricing consumers will pay? Please read on to page 2. |
