The PS3 will get a streaming music video service in early 2009, and Sony is working on an iTunes Store lookalike for the well-regarded console.

David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) used his opening address at the Leipzig Games Convention to announce that a trial service from VidZone will begin early next year for PS3 owners in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The free service will offer a wide range of genres "from hip-hop to punk and heavy metal to classics," and users can build their own playlists and see what's popular on VidZone.

Reeves said the latest research showed that music was the second most popular feature on PS3, after gaming, of course. He explained that the new service will appear on the XrossMediaBar, and that for a small fee videos, songs and ring tones will also be downloadable to mobile phones.

The new feature will also allow users to stream videos to their PlayStation Portables using the Remote Play capability.

If you want to see what will be on offer to PS3 users next year, VidZone's web site is www.vidzone.tv.

Now, what about Sony's potential competitor for the iTunes Store? Please turn to page two.
