Vodafone has released a new USB-connected 7.2Mbps wireless broadband modem, its first to operate at the 900MHz frequency Vodafone is using for the expansion of its network to cover 98 percent of the population. It comes with connectivity software for Mac and Windows embedded, and Windows users also get to send and receive SMS.
The device can also be used as a flash memory drive for storing music, photos and files and comes a MicroSD slot capable of holding a memory card up to 4GB. It will retail for $249 but is available free on some 24 month plans. Vodafone's wireless broadband plans start at $19.95 per month for Vodafone voice customers ($29.95 stand-alone) for 1Gbyte. 5GB costs $39.95 bundled and $49.95 unbundled

Vodafone is positioning its mobile broadband service as a direct competitor to ADSL. Helen Tuffy, head of consumer data at Vodafone Australia, said: "the Vodafone Internet Stick is a great alternative to fixed line ADSL...giving Australians the freedom to ditch their landline and stay connected at home and on the move,"

Vodafone has discontinued its existing USB connected modem.
