Page 2 of 2 Hi5 managed an impressive 100 percent growth, with Friendster on 50 percent, Orkut on 41 percent, and Bebo on 32 percent. Overall, unique visitors to social networking sites grew by 25 percent, according to comScore. But the real action is taking place in other parts of the world. On current rates of growth, Europe is set to displace North America as Facebook's largest market within a few months. Facebook more than tripled its European visitors over the year to June 2008. Facebook recorded a stunning 1055 percent growth in Latin America, coming off a modest but not insignificant base of over one million visitors. Growth was also strong in the Middle East and Africa (403 percent, compared with 66 percent for all social networking sites), and Asia Pacific (458 percent vs 23 percent). comScore attributes Facebook's success to localisation. "By increasing the site’s relevance to local markets through local language interface translation, the site is now competing strongly or even capturing the lead in several markets where it had a relatively minor presence just a year ago," said comScore executive vice president Jack Flanagan.
