Sound out your environment with SoundMeter for the iPhone E-mail

As if to prove that iPhone applications aren't all fun, games and silliness  (think Slasher or I Am Rich), Faber Acoustical has released SoundMeter, a program that lets the handset act as a sound level meter.

While "SoundMeter has not been shown to meet ANSI or IEC standards for sound level meters" and the developer admits the level displayed could be out of 6dB or more, it could be useful for persuading your parents that you haven't got the stereo turned up too high, or alternatively for persuading your kids that their music is too loud.

It might also come in handy during arguments with the co-worker in the next cubicle who always shouts down the phone.

According to Faber Acoustical, the iPhone 3G's built-in and headset microphones have a "remarkably flat" frequency response, but the program is not recommended for use with the original iPhone.

Peaks of up to 105dB can be recorded with the built-in mic, or 100dB with the headset. SoundMeter can be calibrated against a 'known good' sound level meter.

Despite the limitations, SoundMeter "is an excellent alternative to other inexpensive handheld meters for home or hobbyist use", according to Faber Acoustical officials.

SoundMeter is available for $US19.95/$A23.99 from the App Store.
