According to Faber Acoustical, the iPhone 3G's built-in and headset microphones have a "remarkably flat" frequency response, but the program is not recommended for use with the original iPhone. Peaks of up to 105dB can be recorded with the built-in mic, or 100dB with the headset. SoundMeter can be calibrated against a 'known good' sound level meter. Despite the limitations, SoundMeter "is an excellent alternative to other inexpensive handheld meters for home or hobbyist use", according to Faber Acoustical officials.
