It might also come in handy during arguments with the co-worker in the next cubicle who always shouts down the phone. According to Faber Acoustical, the iPhone 3G's built-in and headset microphones have a "remarkably flat" frequency response, but the program is not recommended for use with the original iPhone. Peaks of up to 105dB can be recorded with the built-in mic, or 100dB with the headset. SoundMeter can be calibrated against a 'known good' sound level meter. Despite the limitations, SoundMeter "is an excellent alternative to other inexpensive handheld meters for home or hobbyist use", according to Faber Acoustical officials. SoundMeter is available for $US19.95/$A23.99 from the App Store.
