The latest updates for Microsoft Office 2004 and 2008 deliver more than just security patches. If you're on a broadband plan with a small download allowance, be sure to fetch the 2008 updater during off-peak hours - or better still, grab a copy from a trusted friend!

The Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update is not that big a deal, but that's what you'd expect for such a mature product.

In addition to patching bugs that allow a maliciously crafted Excel or PowerPoint file to take control of the system, there's a new version of the Japanese postal code dictionary (important if you need it, useless if you don't), and a fix for an issue that could cause Word to crash when opening documents containing a numbered list.

Even though it is - as usual - a roll-up release incorporating all previous updates back to SP1, the latest updater is less than 15M.

Office 2008 for Mac Update 12.1.2 is on a much bigger scale and is a 160M download.

It to provides protection against the Excel vulnerability (the PowerPoint issue does not apply to Office 2008), but the other changes are far more extensive.

Changes to Word allow the application to launch more quickly, stop the incorrect display of bold text in tables and of borders around form fields, ensure the display of the Close button in Header and Footer view, and avoid a failure to display typed text in footers where section breaks are present.

What about Excel and the other applications? Please read on.
