WinPwn 2.0.0.4 lets Windows users “pwn” iPhone OS 2.0.1 E-mail

Well, despite jailbreaking and unlocking being “unauthorised”, not having the freedom to run whatever software you want on your device, or use it with whichever compatible carrier you want is an effective slap in the face from Apple.

Sure, Apple are trying to “control” the experience and stop apps that are malicious, or compete with Apple’s own functionality (such as browsers or music players), or are detrimental to its partners (such as the NetShare app that allows iPhone users to share their iPhone’s data connection with other computers).

But given that the iPhone is effectively a handheld OS X powered computer, and given that Apple doesn’t stop anyone from writing software for its Mac platforms, overly restricting iPhone and iPod Touch programmers rubs many people the wrong way.

So much so that hackers have been programming third party applications long before Apple announced it would finally allow a “restricted” App Store to come into existence.

Yet even after the App Store launched, allowing developers to easily distribute their apps and earn money in a 70/30 revenue spilt with Apple, the “restrictions” Apple has imposed has seen some decide to distribute their unapproved/unauthorised third party apps anyway.

This is done on jailbroken iDevices through either the Cydia or the Installer 4 beta, which now come with most pwned firmware versions of the 2.0.1 OS.

Although there were dozens, if not hundreds of unauthorised third-party programs available for the old 1.1.4 OS, Apple changed things in OS 2.0 and 2.0.1, stopping many of the previous programs from running and forcing developers to re-write their programs for 2.x compatibility.

This means that the program selection on Cydia and Installer 4 is, for the time being, very small.

But this will change, and more apps are on the way. And already, there are articles on the Internet that explain what good unauthorised apps are now available, even if the selection is still relatively tiny, compared with the unauthorised apps for 1.1.4 and the official App store.

What are some of interesting unauthorised apps? Please read on to page 3.
