PwnageTool 2.0.2 for iPhone starts sparkling – then stops E-mail

The iPhone Dev Team continues:

“We’ll post the fixed version to sparkle as soon as it is fixed, (which will be after we’ve had some sleep) and also post a direct link too. We were considering releasing a beta “at your own risk” release, but it is just too risky as we didn’t test on all our machines yet. Remember we ship “safe-tools”.

“See you in the morning guys and gals.”

So, despite a litany of complaints by ungrateful users that they have to wait a few hours more, the Dev Team isn’t stupid: why unleash a version that could cause all kinds of support issues and more heartache?

The tool is free, after all, and the Dev Team refuse any donations, so no-one can complain they are being ripped off.

Plenty of commenters realise this and have thanked the Dev Team for their efforts, although it is funny to read the rants of disappointed junior haxx0rs who think that the height of hacking is pressing a button in a hacking program.

iPhone 2G owners who previously used the PwnageTool 2.0.1 or the WinPwn software to update their jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 2Gs to iPhone OS 2.0.1 for the bug fixes are able to press the “update” button (not restore button) to safely upgrade and keep the unlocked status, but lose the jailbreak and the ability to install software from Cydia or get access to the Mobile Terminal.

For details on how to do just that, if you’re an unlocked iPhone 2G owner, you can read my recent article on the topic.

Given that most people are, for now, happy with the App Store, this has allowed 2G iPhone users to experience a slightly less buggy iPhone OS 2.0.1, although serious bugs still remain, such as the incredibly slow typing speed in the SMS application.

But the wait for those users has only been literally just a few days, and now we’re nearly there – the PwnageTool 2.0.2 will arrive, with Cydia and the Installer 4 beta, in just a few hours.

Hopefully a few hours after that the WinPwn version for Windows users will arrive, as the PwnageTool app is only for Macs.

And balance will finally be restored to the force, as far as the rebel iPhone hackers see it.

For Apple, it will be yet another opportunity to strike back when iPhone OS 2.1 appears, something all iPhone users are waiting for, most of whom are quite annoyed that OS 2.0 is the buggiest iPhone operating system yet.
