Page 3 of 3 According to the article, CSPI nutrition policy director Margo G. Wootan states, “Parents want to feed their children healthy meals but America’s chain restaurants are setting parents up to fail. McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, and other chains are conditioning kids to expect burgers, fried chicken, pizza, French fries, macaroni and cheese, and soda in various combination at almost every lunch and dinner.” Featured Whitepaper

Science DiscussionsSubway’s was the best fast-food chain when it came to having the least number of kids’ meals over 430 calories. Only 33% of its “Fresh Fit for Kids” meals were over 430 calories. For instance, an example of some of its combinations that do not exceed the 430-calorie limit are its “... mini-sub, juice box, and one of several healthful side items (apple slices, raisins, or yogurt).". The article also states that Subway is the only chain that doesn’t offer soft drinks with kids’ meals” but substitutes healthier drinks such as juice or milk. In addition to having too many calories, the CSPI report also found that 45% of the kids’ meals at the 13 fast-food chains contained excessive amounts of saturated fat and trans fats (two very “bad” fats), while 89% of the combo kids’ meals had excessive amounts of sodium. Wootan adds, “People may not get a heart attack until their 50s or 60s, but arteries begin to clog in childhood. Most of these kids’ meals appear to be designed to put America’s children on the fast-track to obesity, disability, heart attack, or diabetes.” According to the CSPI article, it advocates, “… laws or regulations that require chain restaurants to list calories on menus and menu boards.” |
