Canadian utility BC Hydro is offering its business customers a $C6 rebate for every Macintosh running the third-party Power Manager utility. While Mac OS X's Energy Saver allows for one automatic start up or wake event and one shutdown or sleep per day, Power Manager is considerably more flexible.

Developed by UK-based Dragon Systems Software (DssW), Power Manager supports multiple schedules to automatically start up, sleep, wake and shut down computers at various times of day.

For example, computers may be set to automatically start up just before the start of business, even if opening time varies on certain days of the week. The same goes for shutting down just after knocking-off time. Such automation can be especially useful for public access computers in museums or art galleries, even where special events are arranged outside normal hours.

And where a group of workers takes enforced break at scheduled times, Power Manager can put their Macs to sleep for the duration.

"We are very pleased to add DssW Power Manager for Mac to our list of eligible energy-efficient products for PIP [Product Incentive Program]," said Carmelina Sorace, commercial marketing manager for BC Hydro Power Smart.

"The product will help businesses save money and improve their work environment. Little changes can go along way in achieving energy savings."

So how much does Power Manager cost? Please read on.
