VMware well entrenched as leader in growing virtualisation market E-mail

A survey by US research firm TheInfoPro (TIP) show VMware firmly entrenched as the lead player in a rapidly growing virtualisation market, but, TIP warns that complacency would be misplaced.

TIP says it conducted more than 160 one-on-one hour-long interviews with Fortune 1000 and midsize enterprise end users. It asked them which server vendors they were using or considering using. VMware came in just behind Microsoft being used by almost 80 percent of respondents and under consideration by 30 percent (the responses overlap). Microsoft was used by 80 percent but under consideration by only 15 percent. The nearest rival, HP garnered only 45 percent current usage and 15 percent under consideration.

Virtualisation was the number one server priority for respondents (48 percent) closely followed by consolidation (which generally relies on virtualisation) at 35 percent. Reducing the number of physical servers was the key goal behind virtualisation for almost 50 percent of respondents in 2008. However by 2010 it is expected to be dynamic provisioning: this rated the most responses (30 percent). By 2010 reducing server numbers had dropped to third place in respondents' ranking of key virtualisation goals with 20 percent. Disaster recovery was in second place with 25 percent.

Eighty-eight percent of large organisations said they were not even considering switching from VMware to another provider and 49 percent of VMware customers said it would be difficult to switch to another vendor because of the time and money that had been invested not only in the product, but in tools and training.

And TIP finds the market still largely untapped. "Nearly 40 percent [of respondents] state that less than five percent of their servers host virtualisation today...By 2010, 70 percent of organisations believe that over 50 percent of all new servers deployed will host virtualisation."

However, Bob Gill, managing director of server research for TIP, warns that VMware's ongoing leadership is anything but assured. "With future goals for virtualisation increasing in complexity, in addition to a still-untapped market for virtualising production applications, plus well-rated, credible alternatives recently being introduced to the space, there is a strong possibility that VMware's dominance will come under attack, despite current customer loyalty."

Respondents to TIP's survey cited a wide range of other virtualisation software providers either used or in plan. These included: 4Base Technology, Avocent, Archstone Consulting, BMC Software, Brocade, Chip PC, CiRBA, Citrix, Compellent, DirectAdmin, Enigmatec, HP, IBM, Leostream, Lex Systems, Microsoft, NetApp, Novell, Parallels, PerfMan, Red Hat, Sun, Symantec, TeamQuest, UltraBac, Vizioncore and Wyse Technology.
