Database and integration software vendor, InterSystems, has thrown its support behind Australian-based software developer, QMSoftware, which has adopted its post-relational database technology to power a new product to backup and replicate oWindows file systems to InterSystems' CACHÉ database.

Applications for the new system, called Replica Backup, include automated backup for entire networks and a unique laptop solution to secure sensitive data if a laptop is stolen. Replica Backup replicates entire Windows file systems, encrypting, compressing and storing them remotely and/or locally to InterSystems' CACHÉ database.

"Small and medium businesses often neglect backup, particularly when there is no resident IT support," said Mike Malone, CEO of QMSoftware. "We wanted to develop a product that would make backup so easy and reliable that the company data and its future are protected without the need for any user interaction. As a byproduct, we devised a laptop security solution which ensures that files cannot be accessed on a lost or stolen laptop.

"Every business would like to be able to run backups all day long, perhaps even every 10 minutes, but nobody wants to copy the whole hard drive every day let alone several times throughout the day," said Malone. "We wanted to make sure we could identify the changed portions of files and send small amounts of encrypted data with just the changes to the database many times a day so that the backup is as up-to-date as possible."

QMSoftware is now in the early stages of bringing Replica Backup to market and is currently seeking additional distributors to help with the sales process. "You can back up ten workstations and a pair of servers for $200 per month, including support and CACHÉ licenses," Malone says. "We're up and running with a solution we think is very effective and competitive."

Denis Tebbutt, InterSystems managing director in Australia, welcomed QMSoftware's decision to adopt CACHÉ. "QMSoftware's vision and focus on creating an innovative mission critical application with the best possible value proposition for potential customers drew them naturally to InterSystems," said Tebbutt.
