Taizo Nishimuro has been elected to IBM's board of directors, effective September 22, 2008.

"We are very pleased Nishimuro-san will be joining the IBM board of directors," said IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer Samuel Palmisano.

"He has a unique understanding of the needs of Asian markets, and his knowledge and insights will make a significant contribution to our company."

Nishimuro was president and chief executive officer of Toshiba Corporation between June 1996 and June 2000, and its chairman between June 2000 and June 2005. He then became chairman of the board of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

He holds a B.S. in economics from Keio University.
