Such is the power of the iPhone that it's the subject of at least one question raised at every cellphone vendor's press event, and Dennis Kavelman, COO of BlackBerry developer Research in Motion reckons it's the best thing to hit the smartphone market in ages.

RIM launched its latest BlackBerry offering, the BlackBerry Bold onto the Australian market this week with Asia Pacific regional director, Adele Beachley, saying "Australia is a very important market for us. We are poised for very rapid growth here." Her comments were re-inforced by Kavelman who said: "BlackBerry is everywhere in North America and Europe. Now we aim to duplicate that success in this region of the world."

RIM does not disclose subscriber numbers by any market: it will say only that it has 16 million in total. Australia generally accounts for two percent of the world market but given that Nokia with 40 percent share of the global market does even better in Australia, and given that BlackBerry claims to be "the best selling smartphone in North America", two percent (80,000) might well be optimistic for RIM's current share of the local market.

When the inevitable question about the iPhone came up, Kavelman said he was all for it. Because the astonishing amount of promotion that has surrounded the iPhone since before the launch of the first version in June 2007 has delivered a significant boost to the whole smartphone market. "When Apple launched the first iPhone exclusive to AT&T in the US, last year our sales with AT&T and every other US network went up," Kavelman said.

He added: "Every new entrant [in the smartphone market] helps to grow the pie. The iPhone has done wonders for us in the US and Canadian markets and we are expecting the same thing here." And of course RIM expects the Bold to be the vehicle that wil help it achieve its goals. Well, it looks impressive enough.
