It is the first BlackBerry to support tri band HSPA at 3.6Mbps (it will support HSPA on Next G at 850MHz and at the 900MHz frequency being used by Optus and Vodafone for their planned 3G network expansions). It comes with WiFi, bluetooth, GPS, FM radio, a 2 megapixel camera 1GBytes of on board memory plus a micro SD slot for a further 8Mbytes. Most importantly, it has a full qwerty keyboard.

Separate from the traditional integration with the BlackBerry enterprise server, it support multiple email accounts including: ISP email, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, IBM® Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise. It can sync with iTunes, but only under Windows.

Vodafone, Optus and Telstra have all announced that they will offer the Bold. Optus will sell the Bold for $10 per month over 24 months in conjunction with the BlackBerry $79 Cap plan (available only to eligible business customers as defined by Optus). Seemingly oblivious of recent trends to emphasise energy conservation and sustainability Optus says it will be " showcasing the BlackBerry Bold smartphone in an eye-catching [and gas-guzzling] stretch Hummer limousine around Sydney in coming weeks."

Vodafone has yet to announce pricing details. Telstra pre-empted RIM's launch with a high profile presentation of a BlackBerry Bold to the CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Telstra confirmed that it would offer the phone at $0 but gave no other pricing details.

3, has yet to announce whether it will offer the Bold, but seemed to be trying to steal some of RIM's thunder by announcing yet another better deal on mobile broadband.

3 has introduced two additional new mobile broadband plans and increased data allowances on its $20, $30 and $40 X-Series Internet packs. On 3 Mobile Broadband customers can now get 6GB for $39 per month and 7GB for $49 per month over 24 months. Also, 3 is increasing data allocations on its X-Series Internet Packs to 1GB, 2GB and 3GB on the X-Series Ultimate 20, X-Series Ultimate 30 and X-Series Ultimate 40 packs respectively. And all X-Series customers with compatible handsets will now get 4,000 minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls every month. Unlimited access to MySpace will also be added to the X-Series Ultimate Packs.
