So how fast is the podcast business growing?  Explosively, according to Relihan, and he asserts that the value of building his social network has been clearly demonstrated.

"In April, I had 6,000 downloads. In May and June it stabilised at 8,000. This month we're poised to get 12,000 downloads. So it's doubled in the last three months. Considering the only people I've exposed or marketed my podcast to is my (LinkedIn) network which has grown to 16,000. So I'm getting 12,000 downloads a month from 16,000 connections. So the potential is huge."

Those who take Relihan's words lightly should beware. This writer first met him 12 years ago when the Internet was but a pup. Back then his advice was get yourself an email newsletter, the Internet is going to be huge for the media. He wasn't wrong then so there's no reason to disbelieve his words about the potential of social networking to make businesses fly today.

The latest podcast from Relihan's The Connections Show features a first time published author who used his LinkedIn network to help sell out the first print run of his book on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.
