TechCrunch has reported that Jed Stremel, the Director of Mobile at Facebook, announced at the “Mobile Web Wars Roundtable” that the magic 1m user mark has been reached. Clearly Facebook is aiming for millions more – after all, on June 10 when the new Facebook App was launched, a Facebook press release touted more than 1.5m users of the existing, near year-old Facebook web app, so there’s still plenty of people yet to come on board. Of course, there’s lots of places around the world where the iPhone 3G isn’t yet available – 20 more countries come online on August 20, and given that the Facebook App is reported to be the 6th most popular at the iPhone App Store, Facebook’s user base will clearly swell even futher. TechCrunch wanted to get a feel for MySpace’s “corresponding numbers” but could only get a figure of 1.7m unique users a day via its mobile WAP site, which anyone can browse with a mobile phone equipped with even a simple web browser. As TechCrunch notes, this isn’t quite an exact comparison, and they promise to update the figures when they can get some different/better numbers – there is, after all, a MySpace Mobile App available for the iPhone, too. In addition, we learn that Facebook are going to make its app “open source”, with TechCrunch suggesting “copy cats” on the way soon. Whichever way you look at it, social networking seems to be getting ever more popular, despite initial claims from some that it was just a fad.
