If you’ve been waiting for the Windows version of the PwnageTool to

soon be yours – but is iPhone OS 2.0 truly worth it?Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Before we go on: unlocking and jailbreaking your iPhone always carries a risk of damage, may not be legal in your jurisdiction and likely voids your warranty. So please be aware of that before taking any further action! Now, given that you have purchased the phone and should be able to do with it what you want, the iPhone Dev Team spent 9 days perfecting its PwnageTool 2.0, and the releasing a PwnageTool 2.0.1, but shock horror: it was only available to Mac users. This is naturally no shock to a Mac owner, but there were plenty of Windows users hoping the PwnageTool would soon come for Windows, too. While there was a “workaround” that does the job, as described in an article called “Pwnage option to unlock iPhone 2G for Windows users released”, a true WinPwn 2.0 has been awaited ever since, and it as finally arrived. And as a quick aside, two other hacks are now known, too: an easy “iPhone 3G customisation” showing a “how to hack the keyboard and number display format for any country”, along with the news that an “iPhone as modem tethering hack” has also been revealed. So, where’s the WinPwn tool? You’ll find it, and all the details, at the WinPwn site. Called WinPwn 2.0, predictably enough, it supports 1.1.4 and 2.0 firmware (the iPhone OS 2.0) and both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. Presumably it also supports the iPod Touch as the PwnageTool also does. It also works on XP and Vista. The “custom image” the software creates will unlock and jailbreak the iPhone 2G, and jailbreak the iPhone 3G. If WinPwn also supports the iPod Touch, it will jailbreak it too. There is a small bug, which is being fixed, but it won’t affect most users. But do you really want to go to iPhone 2.0 just yet, especially if you’ve been waiting for PwnageTool or WinPwn to arrive and haven’t yet upgraded from 1.1.4? Continued on page 2. |
