Page 1 of 3 Related storiesAlthough PwnageTool 2.0 can’t as yet unlock the iPhone 3G’s baseband, with the iPhone Dev Team saying in previous statements that it has made some progress on an unlock and would continue work on it, given the wide availability of the iPhone 3G through numerous carriers worldwide, an unlock for the 3G model is a lower priority at this point in time anyway. The biggest priority for many was to unlock and jailbreak the iPhone 2G running the new iPhone OS 2.0. This would allow original iPhone users running 1.1.4 or older firmware to safely upgrade to the new OS 2.0 for all the App Store goodness, while also being able to use whatever GSM SIM card they want, as is the case today on pre 2.0 firmware. Although iPhone OS 2.0 was unlocked and jailbroken before the iPhone OS 2.0 was even officially available, squishing all the bugs, testing different scenarios and firmware versions, testing App Store programs running alongside unauthorised third party apps and more has taken some time: 9 days. But 9 days is hardly a long time, even though many commenters at the iPhone Dev Team blog made it seem like a wait of decades through constant, endless whining, pleading and begging. It made no difference to the Dev Team, they took their time to ensure the unlock tool worked properly and this should keep most people happy, although already some commenters at the Dev Team blog have reported issues. The iPhone Dev Team says that it will issue a more formal announcement soon, but the download location and a mirror is available, and one website has already published instructions on what to do.
