Asus Eee PC 1000H finally lands down under. Cool!

Page 2 of 3 Next up is the 10-inch screen, with delivers a WSVGA resolution of 1024x600, the same resolution Asus used for the 901 series that comes with an 8.9-inch screen. While not as big as the 1024x768 resolution many are more familiar with, it essentially means the vast majority of web pages can be viewed properly without needing to scroll horizontally as was the case with the 800x400 resolution of the original 701 series. You also get to see more of whatever document you might be working on, and of course a larger screen is easier on the eyes. So a bigger screen is a big plus. Next up is an 80GB hard drive, onto which Microsoft Windows XP Home edition is loaded. Although the Asus Australia press release makes no mention, as yet, of a Linux edition, Linux versions are available overseas, so we’d expect to see one here too, using an SSD combination that likely offers at least 16GB of space (8GB of storage on board, and at least another 8GB of storage in an internal storage expansion slot, as is the case with the Linux powered 901 series). The CPU used is the new Intel Atom, and while its speed is not listed, it is very likely to be the new 1.6GHz model. This offers performance comparable to the Celeron 900MHz processor, but when coupled with Asus “Super Hybrid Energy” mode produces much longer battery life, although a 10-inch screen will chew through more power than the 8.9-inch screen of the 901 series. Still, the battery life that has been measured on the Atom-equipped 901 was as high as 4.6 hours (280 mins) with everything “on” in a “worst case scenario” mode, so the 1000H should, in power savings mode at least, produce similar battery life magic. And Asus themselves say the 6-cell battery the 1000H uses gives 4.5 hours of life, dependent on power savings mode settings, so this is a good sign. And although you likely already know what "Super Hybrid Engine technology" would like achieve, Asus describes it as letting users easily adjust CPU frequency, voltage and LCD brightness to minimise system noise and energy consumption so you can save "up to 15% power or maximising performance".
