Microsoft’s “You’re in the movies” uses an Xbox webcam to let you create home made mini movies in your lounge room, something that decidedly does not involve spending hours mashing buttons to save Earth or finish the fight.

Microsoft have also introduced “Avatars” which are quite similar to the Mii characters on the Wii, although they look graphically nicer that the more basic Mii characters.

There’s also a Singstar clone called “Lips” that will appeal to American Idol hopefuls or to anyone that wants to play a singing/karaoke game on their Xbox 360. It works with your iPod or Zune connected, too. More wholesome, family, casual gaming fun to broaden the Xbox 360’s appeal.

A game from the Scene It people called “Box Office Smash” will also add to casual gaming cred.

From the co-operative gaming point of view, something called “Live Parties” lets 8 people play games together online, but also share digital media with each other. Meanwhile, another feature coming later this year is called “Xbox Live Primetime”, an online game show from Endemol (makers of Big Brother and other shows) which will offer “real prizes”, although more details are yet to emerge.

US Xbox 360 owners can take advantage of the NetFlix service to access 10,000 movies and TV shows using the “Watch it now” service, adding to Microsoft’s existing library of movies and TV shows via Xbox Live which it also separately expanded to include shows like The Office, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, 30 Rock and others.

There are new Xbox Live arcade games coming like Geometry Wars 2, Portal: Still Alive, Galaga Legions and Banjo Kazooie, as well as major titles like Gears of War 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Fallout Three, Resident Evil 5 and others.

Games like Resident Evil 5 and Gears of War 2 will feature "co-operative" gaming modes, where players work together to complete a game and/or fight enemies, rather than fighting against each other. It's not a new concept - plenty of arcade games have had two player modes to work together, but it's coming to the online world in a big way this year: expect to hear more about it!

Microsoft also launched a 60GB Xbox 360 model in the US which will presumably be available around the world.

Another new feature lets gamers load the contents of their Xbox 360 games to the hard drive – assuming there is enough free space.

This means that games will play from the hard disk, resulting in quicker load times and no disc noisily spinning in the DVD slot, although you will need to have the original disc in the drive to validate ownership of the game in question.

Microsoft is also offering support for new resolutions, “adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050”, while the Xbox Live interface has been re-designed, looking snazzier and more appealing.

So, what about Sony? Please read on to page 3.
