Woe is Yahoo and MSN search in Australia: Google has claimed an 87.81% share of Australian searches according to web measurement company Hitwise, and dominates the 44 other search engines Hitwise measures, achieving top figures in the US and UK, too. What hope is there for Google’s competitors?

Not only is Google dominating the Australian, US and UK markets, it has increased its market share from a year ago, showing the world’s love affair with Google is growing, not shrinking, according to the Hitwise search engine analysis released today.

Australian search results for Google.com and Google.com.au combined for a total of 87.81% in the four weeks leading to June 28, 2008, jumping from 78.55% in June 2007 – an 11.79% increase year-on-year!

Meanwhile, MSN Search (Microsoft) achieved only a 6.72% share in the same June 2008 period, and Yahoo scraped in a 3.93%. Another 42 search engines could collectively only claim a 1.54% share.

Both MSN and Yahoo actually lost market share from their June 2007 positions, as at the time MSN had a much higher 14.68% share and Yahoo 5.28%.

The Australian results come from a sample size of 3 million Australians, and the MSN and Yahoo search results come from local and international versions of their search properties in Australia, as is the case with Google.

In the US, Google’s share of the market in June 2008 reached 69.17%, with Yahoo at a much more respectable 19.62% and MSN lagging at only 5.46%.

But compared with June 2007, only Google has grown from 63.98% to the 69.17% figure. Yahoo has dipped from what was a 21.33% share and MSN has dipped from last year’s 9.86% achievement.

The US results come from a Hitwise sample of 10 million US users.
