Apple has apologised to .Mac/MobileMe customers for the 'rocky' transition and promised a 30-day extension to subscriptions as a sweetener.

The company's .Mac suite of Internet services - including email, data synchronisation, and web storage and hosting - was rebranded as MobileMe to coincide with the introduction of the iPhone 3G.

At the same time, various changes were made including a complete redesign of the web interface, a revamping of web mail, and a new calendar web application.

However, the cutover was far from smooth, and took several days to complete. An absence of information didn't help - as users were unable to log into the web site, they could not get status information for the various services.

The bulk of the problems concerned the MobileMe web applications, including the MobileMe home page. Apple claims the transition of "core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly", but some users are still complaining of problems accessing their MobileMe account with mail client software, or connecting to their iDisk from the Finder.

The subscription extension applies to those that had an active .Mac account on July 9, and to new MobileMe accounts created on or before 7pm US PDT on July 15.

Apple's also giving 'push' the push - at least partially. Page 2 explains all.
