Page 3 of 4 While the iPhone Dev Team’s free tool is expected to be available relatively soon, the iPhone Dev Team was challenged by original hardware hacker Geohot (George Hotz) to release their tool by 6pm Tuesday, US time, a timeframe that has already come and gone – with no unlock tool from Geohot to trump the iPhone Dev Team. This image showed Steve Wozniak as Jesus, surrounded by the twelve disciples and a kitten called ‘Pixel’. Each of the iPhone Dev Team members had their ‘eyes’ black out censorship style, and the base of the photo had the face of Geohot (George Hotz) in the place of the traitor, Judas. Geohot is wearing a white t-shirt with Google emblazoned on one arm, and looking at the picture of Steve Wozniak, a similarly dressed individual is shown in Woz’s lap, presumably doing something that is best left to your imagination. The iPhone Dev Team also released a new blog posting outlining they’ve been very, very busy, and that its upcoming tool will not only unlock and jailbreak the iPhone 2G running OS 2.0, and jailbreak the iPod Touch, but will also jailbreak (but not yet unlock) the iPhone 3G. The iPhone Dev Team specifically says: “So some might think we’ve been twiddling our thumbs or sat on our hands, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. That truth is that we’ve have added a little feature that a few people might like. Here is a screenshot of the new and improved device selection screen. “Here is another video to illustrate this. “What you are seeing is the world’s first jailbroken iPhone 3G running our own software. I think you’ll agree that this was worth the wait. “This isn’t a release announcement, but all I can say is that we are working very hard ;-)”. So... no release announcement yet, but in theory the iPhone Dev Team’s tool will come soon, while Geohot’s “threat” to release his own tool has come and gone with nothing as yet. Geohot’s next move is unknown as yet, but presumably if the iPhone Dev Team goes on and on with more and more videos and no true indication of when its tool will be released, Geohot will come good on his “threat” and trump the iPhone Dev Team, so everyone will just need to wait a bit longer. But what about Zibri, of Ziphone fame? He too had been promising a quick unlock for the new iPhone, but it would seem Apple’s last minute changes to the iPhone 3G hardware have stymied Zibri’s plans and he’s had to issue a blog post saying he’s tired of all the attention and may never release anything, while not ruling it out. What precisely did Zirbi say? And what are the fans of all three hacker factions saying? Please read on to page 3. |
